Sault Ste. Marie Travel & Tourism

Sault Ste. Marie is a city that cherishes its roots. Our city boasts a revitalized downtown, an amazing waterfront and a parade of summer festivals to celebrate the diverse cultures that make it what it is today. But we are also the gateway to world-class outdoors, in the heart of the Cambrian Shield and on the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Enjoy all the amenities of a modern, urban city, while not foregoing the quaint charm and warmth of a Northern Ontario community.

Completed in 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal is a Parks Canada National Historic Site. It formed the final link in an all-Canadian waterway and was first to operate with hydro-electric power generated on-site. The Canadian lock opened to recreational traffic in 1998. It allows vessels to bypass the St. Marys rapids to execute the 6.4 m (21 ft) difference in elevation between Lakes Superior and Huron.

The Roberta Bondar Marina offers a minimum water depth of 3 m (10 ft) in a sheltered basin right off the St. Marys River. Thirty-eight transient docks up to 13 m (44 ft) in length, plus 137 m (450 ft) of fully-serviced dock are available to accept larger vessels. The Roberta Bondar Marina is also a Canada Customs check-in point and is within walking distance of Sault Ste. Marie’s scenic downtown area.

Pilotage in this port is mandatory. Passage through the locks generally takes between 40 and 60 minutes for cruise ships. Tendering is not an option in Sault Ste. Marie as the nearest anchorage is more than 5 nautical miles away.

To really appreciate all that Sault Ste. Marie has to offer, you need a plan. Whether you are looking for an all-inclusive package, an outdoor adventure experience, a ride on a scenic train tour or just a quick weekend getaway, we have the tools to help you make that plan.

We have been called the Gathering Place for centuries. Join us and find out why.
